The Key West Chapter of Scubanauts International completed fish identification dives on the reef near Key West.  Pre-dive training was conducted at Subtropic Dive Center the evening before the dive trip.  Tom Crabbs is the President of the Key West Chapter of Scubanauts International.  Gerald Canavan is the Vice-President of the Key West Chapter.   See http://www.scubanautsintl.org/chapters/keywest/index.html for more information on Scubanauts.  Scubanauts is for middle school and high school age students who would like to learn about the ocean and scuba diving.  The Scubanauts’ motto is “Education through Exploration”.

Mangrove Clean Up Crew

On September 19, 2009 Subtropic Dive Center organized and sponsored a mangrove cleanup. The trip to the mangroves was accomplished on kayaks that were donated for the event by Lazy Dog Kayak Rentals. The cleanup crew kayaked to the mangroves then got in the water with snorkeling gear and removed trash that had floated into the mangroves around the island of Key West. On September 19, 2009 Subtropic Dive Center organized and sponsored a reef cleanup. The reef cleanup crew enjoyed a complimentary trip to the reef aboard the Starfish Enterprise II. The scuba diving crew collected trash in mesh bags and transferred the trash to the Starfish. A very successful cleanup of trash on the reef was accomplished.
