What is Nitrox?

Strictly speaking “nitrox” is any breathing mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, including standard breathing air (the stuff that covers the planet). Divers today, however, are generally referring to what is commonly called “Enriched Air Nitrox” when they talk about nitrox diving. These “EAN” mixtures contain a higher than normal percentage of oxygen, thereby reducing the nitrogen and increasing the allowable safe bottom time.

You’ll remember from your Open Water Diver Class that nitrogen build-up in your tissues is the factor limiting the amount of time you can stay under water at a given depth without requiring decompression stops during your ascent.

NOAA first established standards for EAN breathing mixes in 1978. Mixtures containing 32% and 36% oxygen (compared to 20% in “normoxic” or standard air) are called NOAA Nitrox I and NOAA Nitrox II respectively. Subtropic offers these mixes to qualified divers for use on our dive trips or as tank fills to take out from the shop.

To qualify for the benefits of Nitrox diving, special training is required. Subtropic Dive Center offers the course from $99 to teach about the limitations and safe use of nitrox. You will learn about the use of special tables, gas analysis, and nitrox computers, and conduct supervised dives using nitrox mixes.

Call Subtropic today to learn more about this exciting innovation in recreational diving.
